Windows Search down for many — here's the fix

Updated February five, 2022: The consequence seems related to Bing. We've updated our guide to fixing search related issues to include a partial fix and added the steps to the bottom of this article.

Windows Search is down for many Windows ten users. Reports on Reddit appeared recently with many people seeing cipher but a blank box within Windows Search. One Reddit post states that the consequence persits fifty-fifty afterwards rebuilding the alphabetize of Windows Search. Another post says that online resources practise not assist.

Updated Feb 5, 2022: In an update to its support page, Microsoft says that the event was resolved earlier today. However, you may still need to restart your PC and "in rare cases, you may need to manually end the SearchUI.exe or SearchApp.exe procedure via Task Manager," Microsoft says.

With issues like these, it's ordinarily unclear how widespread the issue is, but based on how quickly give-and-take of the consequence is travelling on Reddit, Discord, and Twitter, it appears this issue could be widespread. The issue currently affects my system, though that's just one example of grade. Many people online point out that several PCs they own see the aforementioned outcome.

We've found a fractional solution to this issue and update our guide on fixing search issues to include this current bug. The issue seems related to Bing, which you lot can disable with the post-obit steps. Following these steps will show local search results, but will not prove web results.

Remove Bing from your searches

In lite of the contempo Windows 10 Search issues where cipher is displayed in the bar or window, many have found a gear up by disabling Bing integration. This does require working with RegEdit, so doing a backup of both your PC and its registry are recommended.

Once you've performed any necessary backups, run through these steps to get Search working once more. Multiple people here at Windows Key have performed the same steps with success.

  1. Hit the Windows Key + R shortcut on your keyboard.
  2. Type regedit and hitting Enter on your keyboard.
  3. Double-click HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
  4. Double-click SOFTWARE.
  5. Double-click Microsoft.
  6. Double-click Windows.
  7. Double-click CurrentVersion.
  8. Double-click Search.
  9. Right-click the correct pane of the RegEdit window to bring up the menu.
  10. Click New.
  11. Click D-WORD (32-bit) Value.
  12. Type BingSearchEnabled and hit Enter on your keyboard.
  13. Double-click the BingSearchEnabled entry you but created.
  14. Type 0 in the Value information field. (It should already be 0 only brand sure).
  15. Click OK.
  16. Double-click CortanaConsent.
  17. Type 0 in the data field. (It should also already be 0 merely make certain).
  18. Click OK.
  19. Restart your PC.

This should bring Windows ten Search back online.
